Meet Chapman Hamborg

Your personal art instructor

Why learning with Chapman is different

My main goal through teaching art is to help my students fall in love with creating, to give them tools to set them up for success, and to push them to grow in their technique and skills. I value both an academic, disciplined attitude; working hard, pushing yourself, and following the tried and true methods of classical representation whilst also embracing the more creative side of art: letting go, enjoying the process, and making room for personal expression.

It’s important for me to help students gain a strong foundation in their medium, whether it be drawing, painting, or sculpture but also for them to go beyond that and to focus on their unique style, what they want to say with their work, and for them to develop their own creative process. I find it key to explain concepts and assignments thoroughly, and to demonstrate techniques and approaches to my students. I like to give students individual feedback on their work—explaining where they are succeeding, and where they may need improvement. When doing this I often ask my student’s questions to have a better understanding of their goals for the piece so that I can help them get there rather than just telling them how I would do it.

Another aspect of learning which I believe is very beneficial, is learning about different styles and movements throughout history. I will often lead my students in a study of a particular piece of work, where we will copy it closely to gain a greater understanding of how the masters created.

Because of the many years I spent in art education, receiving instruction myself, in different mediums and different techniques, I have been able to apply the best parts of that education to create the classes at HAA.

Learn more about Chapman Hamborg

Chapman’s love for creating greatly stems from his love of the natural world. He lives with his wife Hannah and their three sons in Southern California, where they enjoy spending time at the beach, surfing, or hiking local nature spots. At home, Chapman can be found in his backyard studio throwing pots on his wheel, or somewhere outside with his sons, painting or gardening as a family.

Chapman grew up in southern California, homeschooled with his four brothers. This alternative education gave Chapman the freedom to pursue art from a young age and he was able to invest a significant amount of time in art from early on. By the time he was a teenager he was taking classes at his local college. After graduating high school, Chapman moved to Florence, Italy to study at Angel academy of art and Florence academy of art, where he developed his exceptional skills in oil painting, drawing and sculpture. On his return to southern california, Chapman continued his education at Laguna College of Art and Design, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in drawing and painting with an emphasis in sculpture, and a masters degree in painting. Over these years Chapman has developed his own personal work and has produced an impressive body of work around the subject of family as well as stunning landscapes.
